WORK IN
ORPHANAGE
Poverty and ongoing
civil conflicts have seriously affected the poorest
children of Nepal. Every year, thousands of children
arrive in Katmandu searching for jobs and a future.
Unfortunately, reality of the city is quite adverse.
Many of these children work over 14-hour a day in
industry, hotels, and restaurants and many of them have
turned into street laborer.
Thousands of children
are forced to desert their home, family and education
due to the decade long Maoists insurgency. Likewise,
Hundreds of children are helpless and hapless as they
lost their parents during the Maoists war. Besides,
poverty, lack of education, and parents’ ignorance have
exacerbated their situation. The Government of Nepal has
failed and is failing to protect the children’s
fundamental rights and privileges. In such context,
orphanages have been caring and educating such
underprovided children. Volunteering in Nepal Orphanage
Project is an enriching and life changing experience for
our volunteers as well as the children. Many of our
former volunteers have reported that this project, in
particular, has been memorable and fulfilling, and has
changed the way they view the world and life. If you
have a strong enthusiasm and willingness to create a
positive impact in the lives of these innocent children,
your helping hands are always welcomed solely for the
advantage of these needy orphans.
Your Activities as a
Volunteer
As a volunteer in
orphanage project in Nepal, you will primarily assist to
boost the knowledge, skill and competence of
disadvantaged and poor children of the country. By
serving the orphans in orphanages, you will be offering
them a different perspective on life that they can carry
into adulthood.
Working in an orphanage
is a real rewarding job though your work can be
difficult at times. The orphanage centers run by our
partners accommodate 20-30 boys and girls between the
ages of 3 to 15. Although this is not an English
teaching placement, you will have the opportunity to
teach English during your stay in the orphanage and
conduct creative programs including games, music, art,
drawing, painting, health, nutrition, and sanitation. If
you are skilled in sewing, painting, tailoring,
crafting, typing, and computing, you can teach these
skills to the children as well. Volunteers’ love, care,
teaching of English language and sharing the experiences
of their own would be a great assistance to gain
confidence to them thereby making their future more
secure, livable and prosperous.
Volunteers Skills
Required

qualifications are required. However, you must be at
least 16 years of old. Volunteers joining orphanage
projects should have love and passion for serving poor

with open mind to learn and serve to the people of new
culture and religion.

TEACHING ENGLISH IN NEPAL
Most of the time,
volunteers in the teaching sector work as instructors of
English of small school children. Teaching in Nepali
schools as volunteers is very charming, fulfilling and
rewarding. Teaching placements are available in both
public and private boarding schools. English teaching
volunteers do not necessarily be native English
speakers. Fluent English speakers with or without formal
teaching experience may also contribute greatly to the
children’s educational development. Our teaching
placements are available in various schools of Kathmandu,
The main resources that you will have in classroom are a
blackboard, book and a peace of chalk. Of course, you
yourself are the most reliable resource for English
teaching in Nepal. As a CSDN volunteer you will give
your students career chances a boost and watching them
grow during your time overseas. You will have the
opportunity to gain the confidence of the students and
their guardians thereby becoming like a member of the
local community.

not available in July and August in any other area
outside of the Katmandu valley because of summer
vacation. CSDN may arrange teaching placements in nearby

destitute citizens. Along with English lessons, you may
teach other skills like game, painting, music,
sanitation, computers and arts. Most schools in Nepal
follow fixed courses for teaching English. Volunteers

HEALTH AND SANITATION
The majority of Nepal’s
people experience severe health problems due to the lack
of health care education, medical services, and
resources in Nepal. Most of the country’s health care
centers are centralized in the capital and few other
cities of the country. A Majority of the rural people in
the country are unable to receive proper health
treatment service due to the lack of sufficient
treatment centers and health workers in rural areas.
CSDN invites compassionate volunteers to bolster lessen
this problem in an effort to boost the quality of health
care for disadvantaged Nepali people.
Moreover, the
doctor-patient ratio is very poor, with one doctor
caring for approximately 16,000 patients-even in cities.
The lack of availability of qualified health care
workers has resulted in many health problems in Nepal.
Your activities as a
volunteer:
Volunteers for health
care projects assist local doctors and medical staff
with the treatment of patients. Volunteers are also
involved in other hospital activities such as record
keeping, sanitation, nutrition, and patient education.
Whatever your level of experience in health and medicine
is, your time, devotion and skills are all that is
needed to make a difference to the lives of diseased and
disadvantaged people of Nepal.
