WORK IN ORPHANAGE

Poverty and ongoing civil conflicts have seriously affected the poorest children of Nepal. Every year, thousands of children arrive in Katmandu searching for jobs and a future. Unfortunately, reality of the city is quite adverse. Many of these children work over 14-hour a day in industry, hotels, and restaurants and many of them have turned into street laborer.

Thousands of children are forced to desert their home, family and education due to the decade long Maoists insurgency. Likewise, Hundreds of children are helpless and hapless as they lost their parents during the Maoists war. Besides, poverty, lack of education, and parents’ ignorance have exacerbated their situation. The Government of Nepal has failed and is failing to protect the children’s fundamental rights and privileges. In such context, orphanages have been caring and educating such underprovided children. Volunteering in Nepal Orphanage Project is an enriching and life changing experience for our volunteers as well as the children. Many of our former volunteers have reported that this project, in particular, has been memorable and fulfilling, and has changed the way they view the world and life. If you have a strong enthusiasm and willingness to create a positive impact in the lives of these innocent children, your helping hands are always welcomed solely for the advantage of these needy orphans.

Your Activities as a Volunteer

As a volunteer in orphanage project in Nepal, you will primarily assist to boost the knowledge, skill and competence of disadvantaged and poor children of the country. By serving the orphans in orphanages, you will be offering them a different perspective on life that they can carry into adulthood. 

Working in an orphanage is a real rewarding job though your work can be difficult at times. The orphanage centers run by our partners accommodate 20-30 boys and girls between the ages of 3 to 15. Although this is not an English teaching placement, you will have the opportunity to teach English during your stay in the orphanage and conduct creative programs including games, music, art, drawing, painting, health, nutrition, and sanitation. If you are skilled in sewing, painting, tailoring, crafting, typing, and computing, you can teach these skills to the children as well. Volunteers’ love, care, teaching of English language and sharing the experiences of their own would be a great assistance to gain confidence to them thereby making their future more secure, livable and prosperous.

Volunteers Skills Required

 No specific skills and qualifications are required. However, you must be at least 16 years of old. Volunteers joining orphanage projects should have love and passion for serving poor kids. Volunteers should also be flexible, self-motivated with open mind to learn and serve to the people of new culture and religion.

TEACHING ENGLISH IN NEPAL

Most of the time, volunteers in the teaching sector work as instructors of English of small school children. Teaching in Nepali schools as volunteers is very charming, fulfilling and rewarding. Teaching placements are available in both public and private boarding schools. English teaching volunteers do not necessarily be native English speakers. Fluent English speakers with or without formal teaching experience may also contribute greatly to the children’s educational development. Our teaching placements are available in various schools of Kathmandu, The main resources that you will have in classroom are a blackboard, book and a peace of chalk. Of course, you yourself are the most reliable resource for English teaching in Nepal. As a CSDN volunteer you will give your students career chances a boost and watching them grow during your time overseas. You will have the opportunity to gain the confidence of the students and their guardians thereby becoming like a member of the local community.

Teaching placement is not available in July and August in any other area outside of the Katmandu valley because of summer vacation. CSDN may arrange teaching placements in nearby villages of Katmandu Valley during July and August. Most of the schools in Nepal follow a fixed English curriculum for English. Volunteers will teach courses in collaboration with local English teachers. Many of our past volunteers have also organized informal English classes in local villages.

Your Activities as a Volunteer:

As a volunteer, you will work in public school with boys and girls in a class size of about 20 to 35. Volunteer teach 2-3 hours a day, Monday to Saturday, working with children ranging in age from 6-15. Also, volunteers may be asked to teach English in a variety of schools and assist Nepal’s most destitute citizens. Along with English lessons, you may teach other skills like game, painting, music, sanitation, computers and arts. Most schools in Nepal follow fixed courses for teaching English. English teaching prior experience is desired but not mandatory for English teaching volunteers. They need to have good communication skill in English but need not necessarily be a native. Volunteers are required to have strong eagerness to help the people of Nepal. Volunteers should also be flexible, self-motivated, open to new cultures and a strong willingness to learn and take new initiatives.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION WORK

Nepal’s natural environment has been deteriorating day by day under the growing demand of trees. In the past few years, thousand of hectors of land have been disappeared due to the soil erosion. To promote conservation work in Nepal,

Your Activities as a Volunteer:

Work in the nursery includes seed collection, sowing, mulching, and watering, trimming, weeding, and related work. The nursery projects produce seedlings that are later distributed to local schools, communities, and villagers for planting in community fields in free of cost. Nursery managers for CSDN guide all volunteers during the project period. Volunteers’ effort and contribution may create a positive impact for the promotion and protection of environmental conservation.

While Volunteering overseas in conservation sector in Nepal, you may find yourself on a working holiday in a spectacular location with local people who carry out wildlife conservation, environmental conservation or historical preservation.

Volunteer Skills Required:

Work in this conservation project may need physical efforts and strengths. You don't need to be experienced in conservation abroad, just bring self-reliance, enthusiasm, motivation to conservation works, patience and an open mind – as conservation also means doing the vital maintenance work to keep your project running

HEALTH AND SANITATION

The majority of Nepal’s people experience severe health problems due to the lack of health care education, medical services, and resources in Nepal. Most of the country’s health care centers are centralized in the capital and few other cities of the country. A Majority of the rural people in the country are unable to receive proper health treatment service due to the lack of sufficient treatment centers and health workers in rural areas. CSDN invites compassionate volunteers to bolster lessen this problem in an effort to boost the quality of health care for disadvantaged Nepali people.

Moreover, the doctor-patient ratio is very poor, with one doctor caring for approximately 16,000 patients-even in cities. The lack of availability of qualified health care workers has resulted in many health problems in Nepal.

Your activities as a volunteer:

Volunteers for health care projects assist local doctors and medical staff with the treatment of patients. Volunteers are also involved in other hospital activities such as record keeping, sanitation, nutrition, and patient education. Whatever your level of experience in health and medicine is, your time, devotion and skills are all that is needed to make a difference to the lives of diseased and disadvantaged people of Nepal.

Volunteer Skills Required:

Any volunteer interested in joining our health care program must have proof of certification as a medical student, nurse, doctor, or other medical-related experience. (Note: Volunteers without professional medical credentials are not allowed to work in this program because of risks involved.)

CULTURE RESTORATION PROJECT

Nepal is the birth place of Buddha, who is popularly known as the light of Asia, the founder of Buddhism. So, Buddhism is widely respected, adopted and promoted in the country. Nepal boasts countless Monasteries, Stupas and Buddhist pilgrimages. However, the physical infrastructures of these monuments are being deteriorated. Due to the dearth of fund and resources these historically and culturally significant monuments could not be renovated. CSDN offers unique Monastery Renovation Project in Nepal where most compassionate helping hands are always welcomed in this sacred project.

The Renovation project aims to build, reconstruct, renovate and restore ancient Buddhist temples (Stupas) and monasteries where resources are lacking. we have been working with local communities to restore culturally important structures, and promoting responsible tourism through volunteer vacations. Our innovative programs to restore Buddhist temples in Nepal allow people from any background and skill level to join the local communities in their restoration efforts.

The result is a truly rewarding having unique travel and cultural experiences. You will have an opportunity to put your heart, hands and mind to preserve and protect the world's great cultural heritage. In turn, our partner communities are provided with jobs, job training and a renewal of community pride.

Your Activities as a Volunteer:

The volunteers will be engaged in the activities such as renovation, painting, and gardening. The volunteers will work 4-5 hours a day, and will be living with the Buddhist families where volunteers can feel and experience the rural setting of Buddhism. CSDN works in such places where the need of renovation is felt. Buddhism, the philosophy of non-violence and peace, is more pertinent in the present context because the world, today, is undergoing through massive war, terror, destruction, obliteration and so on. This unique renovation project may also appeal for world peace and harmony.

In this program, volunteers can travel around Buddhist villages and discover ancient monasteries-joining Buddhist rituals: mediation, chants, and traditions. Volunteers will experience the peaceful life of these religions and renovate the old and neglected monasteries. In addition to your project work, this will be an invaluable opportunity for you to practice and experience Buddhism and to learn the peaceful and non-violence of philosophy of Buddhism.

Volunteer Skills Required:

Volunteers joining this project should have strong compassion and motivation to work for Buddhist people and to renovate the monasteries, stupas etc. Since the renovation and construction work demands some physical effort and strength, you have to be physically strong and perfect. Besides, a willingness to learn and respect Buddhism and Buddhist culture are highly anticipated.

LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAM

CSDN provides a 2-week orientation program comprised of language training, cultural tours, village hiking, visits to popular tourist sites, The main aim of our unique language and cultural orientation is to teach volunteers about local language, culture, customs, and ways of life in fabulous Nepal. By joining our 2-week language program, you will gain new insights into the rich and diverse life of Nepal and its people.

An important part of this program is the home stay, where our volunteers live with warm and welcoming host families, eat Nepalese food, observe village culture, and become a first-hand participant in village life. Additionally, during the home stay program, volunteers will have some project training with the opportunity to observe and practice tasks within the local village that are related to their work and designed as placement preparation

 Second Week Program

After a week of language classes in world famous Katmandu, participants will leave for their stay in a nearby picturesque village. Our home and village stay locations are carefully selected to present the best possible experience with Nepal’s unique culture, customs, and people. Villagers are friendly and eager to welcome our volunteers. Daily life in these quaint villages is untouched by modern civilization. Here, people still practice traditional ways of farming, cooking, working, and other important daily activities. The village stay program is fascinating because it offers the most accurate picture of real Nepal. During your home stay, you will continue to practice your new language skills, enjoying the cross-cultural opportunities available as you walk through each day with your host family.
